Heiliger Hain near Wahrenholz: Our walk straight through the heather bloom
Since the heather season is short, we wanted to see and experience even more of the bloom after our walk through the Gifhorner Heide. Really, we were just looking for a new loop in our area that day: not particularly long, not far away, and nothing that would turn into a whole day trip. That’s how we stumbled across the Heiliger Hain near Wahrenholz.
We had no clear idea of what would be waiting for us there. All we knew was that the heathland in this region is supposed to be really beautiful, and after Gifhorn had already surprised us, there was of course the quiet hope that it might turn out even a little more beautiful here.
So we picked a loop on Komoot, parked the car at the free trailhead car park, and simply set off.

Straight through the heath
It didn’t take long for us to notice that this walk feels completely different from our loop in the Gifhorner Heide. There, we mostly found ourselves walking along the edges of the heathland. In the Heiliger Hain, by contrast, the narrow sandy paths felt like they led right through the middle of it all. In places we had blooming heather directly on both sides of the path, with trees framing the little trails in between.

These paths were exactly what we loved here. Combined with the mostly overcast sky, the landscape had something genuinely mystical about it in places. In between, the sun kept breaking through, it was pleasantly mild, and the heather looked incredibly intense on our visit. Whether the purple really was more vivid than in Gifhorn or whether it simply stood out more because of the narrower paths, we can’t say. For me, though, it looked just a little bit more beautiful again.
We noticed that again later when going through our photos. Some trips leave you with one or two pictures you truly love at the end. Here, our problem was rather having to pick favourites. The heath was simply unbelievably photogenic, and that mix of sandy paths, trees, and all that purple worked in the photos exactly as well as it felt during the walk.
Despite the heather bloom, our visit was also pleasantly quiet. Every now and then we saw other walkers, and at some point two riders came towards us, but all in all we could really enjoy the loop in peace. There wasn’t even that one moment where we’d have said afterwards: That was the highlight. The walk as a whole was simply beautiful.

Our Komoot loop through the Heiliger Hain was 5.24 kilometres long, and for us it was more of a relaxed stroll than a proper hike. There were no real climbs to speak of, but many of the paths led over sand, which somehow suited this landscape perfectly, especially between the heather.
The old sheep barn
Along the way you also pass the old thatched sheep barn, which of course stands out immediately in the middle of all that heather. We read some of the information boards there and eventually caught ourselves wondering whether the barn is still in use today. We couldn’t go inside on our visit, because it was locked. From the outside, though, it’s definitely a pretty cool sight.

The sheep barn dates back to the 17th century and sits fairly centrally in the heathland. The Heiliger Hain itself covers around 56 hectares and is described by the tourism region as the largest continuous heathland of the Südheide Gifhorn.
Past the barn, our loop led on through the heather and later deeper into the forest again. The forest was lovely, but to be honest, it had a hard time after those heath paths. The highlight of this loop was without question the heathland itself.
Would we come back?
Definitely. Next time, we probably wouldn’t walk exactly the same loop again, but would look for a different way through the Heiliger Hain and see what else there is to discover.

If we could pick when to come back, though, it would be during the heather bloom again. That vivid purple and the feeling of really walking right through the middle of the heath on narrow sandy paths were exactly what made this walk for us.
And yes: we still love the Gifhorner Heide. Without our first walk there, we would probably never have thought about trying yet another heathland in our area. But comparing the two walks, I actually liked the Heiliger Hain just a little bit better.
Sometimes you don’t need a big day trip at all. A lovely loop, plenty of heather, and a memory card full of pictures you can’t bring yourself to delete: that’s completely enough.
