Sunset at Durdle Door: When golden light meets icy wind

Visit duration: 2 hours Recommended time: April to October Cost: £39

After our adventure at Lulworth Cove, one thing was clear: we wanted to see Dorset’s most famous photo spot - the rock arch Durdle Door - at sunset. But since it was simply too cold and windy for us in October to do the cliff walk from Lulworth Cove, we chose the lazy option: the car.

Parking money-saving tip

The expensive parking ticket from Lulworth Cove is also valid at Durdle Door on the same day (and vice versa)! So we hopped back into the warm car, drove over, and parked at the upper car park. It saves time - and gives you a chance to warm up again.

The descent (and the dreaded climb back up)

From the car park, it’s about a 20-minute steep walk downhill. While we enjoyed the stunning view of the coastline, we had only one thought in the back of our minds: “Oh no, we have to walk all of this back up later…”. But for this view, you happily accept the burning calves.

Golden magic - and freezing cold

We were right on time. The sun slowly sank into the sea and bathed the natural stone arch in an incredible, golden light. It was absolutely beautiful - but (we can’t say it often enough) freezing cold! Up on these cliffs, the wind has no mercy in October.

One thing surprised us: we weren’t alone. Even at this time of year, it was unexpectedly busy. To get photos and videos without people in the background, we needed patience. We waited for several minutes until the perfect gap appeared.

Is it worth visiting in autumn?

Absolutely! The light in October is much softer and more “dramatic” than in midsummer. Still, we made a promise to ourselves: we want to come back again. Maybe it’ll be a few degrees warmer and we can enjoy the moment a little longer - without our fingers freezing to the camera shutter.
