Jack Wolfskin Hiking Boots: Our Long-Term Experience

Our Jack Wolfskin hiking boots have been with us on travels and hikes since 2024. Our experience with comfort, wet conditions, grip and durability.

Until our first trip to Scotland in 2024, we honestly hadn’t given much thought to proper outdoor clothing. Hiking boots? Layering? Merino? All of that was pretty new to us.

That changed while preparing for Scotland. In guidebooks we kept reading how crucial the right clothing would be, and that layering is the way to go. So for the first time, we took a proper look at what we actually needed for our trip.

And if we were heading to Scotland anyway, we wanted to be properly prepared. So bit by bit, merino leggings, merino shirts and merino socks, fleece jackets, wind- and rain jackets all made their way into our wardrobes. And with them, our first proper hiking boots.

Back then, they were really just a purchase for Scotland. We probably wouldn’t have guessed that we would still be pulling them out of the cupboard regularly today, or that they would become almost second nature on longer hikes.

Why we ended up with these Jack Wolfskin hiking boots

When putting together our outdoor gear, we already knew where we wanted to look. What we didn’t know was that we would end up finding our hiking boots there too.

During a stop at a Jack Wolfskin store, we spotted the boots and simply put them on. We didn’t get any advice, and we didn’t really compare different models either. The boots fit, they felt good, and so we both went home with the same model.

We can no longer say with certainty which exact model our boots are. We assume it’s the Jack Wolfskin Vojo 3 Texapore Mid, since it looks very similar to our boots and the features match. But since we couldn’t find the model name on the boots themselves, we don’t want to commit to it.

Our experience with Jack Wolfskin hiking boots

By the time we reached Scotland, our new hiking boots had to prove themselves. And in fact, we wore them there almost exclusively. Only in cities like Edinburgh did we sometimes head out in different shoes.

Otherwise, they came along pretty much everywhere: on muddy paths, through wet meadows, on the beach and on rocky terrain. Especially on uneven paths, we feel noticeably safer in them than in regular shoes. The boots feel secure on the foot, and the high-cut design gives us extra stability. We never feel like one wrong step could twist an ankle.

Even on longer hikes, we haven’t had any problems with pressure points so far. Of course, after a really long hike your feet will hurt at some point anyway, but for us that’s down to the hike rather than the boots.

In rain and on wet paths, our feet have stayed dry so far. Mud isn’t a problem either. We did learn one thing along the way, though: waterproof doesn’t mean you can just wade into a river. At some point, the water does find its way in.

Inside the boots we usually wear merino socks. With that combination, we haven’t had any problems with heavy sweating even on longer hikes, and in Scotland our feet stayed comfortably warm. Whether that’s down to the boots alone, the merino socks, or simply the combination of both, we can’t say.

Another small advantage of the high cut: on paths through meadows in particular, we worry far less about ticks. Of course, the boots are no replacement for proper tick protection.

What we particularly like: on the trail, we don’t have to give much thought to what lies ahead. Mud, meadow, rocks, beach: we can just set off. And it doesn’t matter if the boots get dirty along the way: that’s exactly what they’re for.

What we like less about the hiking boots

Honestly, there isn’t much to criticize about our hiking boots. But one downside becomes obvious on longer car journeys: the boots are quite bulky.

For hiking, that doesn’t bother us at all. On a longer drive, though, they get uncomfortable at some point. That’s why we no longer put them on at home, but wear regular shoes for the journey and only change into the hiking boots shortly before the hike.

For us, though, that’s not really a criticism of the boot itself. After all, we bought it for hiking, and that’s exactly what it does really well.

We would buy these hiking boots again

Since our Scotland trip in 2024, the hiking boots have been in regular use, especially when longer hikes are coming up, or when we don’t know exactly what terrain to expect along the way.

Despite all that use, we haven’t noticed any significant wear so far. Sole, material and lacing still work without any problems, and the boots do their job just as well as they did on day one.

The estimated £68.77 per pair was therefore money well spent. What started out as gear for a single trip to Scotland has become something that simply belongs on our hikes.

So if we had to choose again, we would go with the Jack Wolfskin hiking boots*.

Are Jack Wolfskin hiking boots waterproof?

In normal rain, wet meadows and on muddy paths, our feet have stayed dry so far. Fully wading into water is another story, though. At some point, our river test got the better of the boots.

For us, yes. Especially on longer hikes we gladly reach for them and haven’t had any problems with pressure points so far.

We can’t remember any uncomfortable breaking-in period. For us, the boots fit well from the very start.

We wear merino socks with them and haven’t had any problems with heavy sweating with that combination. So we can’t attribute that to the boots alone.

How durable are our Jack Wolfskin hiking boots?

Our boots have been in regular use since 2024. To this day, we haven’t noticed any problems with the sole, material or lacing.
